Romania and the United States have agreed to deploy missile interceptors at Deveselu air base in southern Romania as part of a missile defense shield, Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday, Xinhua reported.

"We have agreed that the location for the anti-missile system to be set up should be the former air base at Deveselu in Olt County," Basescu said, adding that "the air base stays under the Romanian command and part of the area of the base will be used by the American anti-missile system."

The president reiterated the U.S. missile defense shield is a defensive, not an offensive system and is in no way directed at Russia.
