Peru's Humala claims victory in presidential runoff

Peru's leftist Ollanta Humala has claimed victory in Sunday's presidential runoff over arch-rival Keiko Fujimori, Xinhua reported.

"We have won the presidential vote," Humala told reporters after partial official results gave him a razor-thin lead over Fujimori, a daughter of jailed former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori.

With 81 percent of the votes counted, the 48-year-old Humala won 50.7 percent of the vote against right-winger Fujimori's 49.3 percent, according to the latest results.

Earlier, Keiko Fujimori, 36, said she would concede defeat if official results confirmed her loss. Both Humala and Fujimori have said they will respect the results of the vote.

Exit polls had also shown that Humala would win the election with some 52 percent of the vote.

Peru's new president will take office on July 28 for a five-year term.
