Berlusconi to resign after economic reforms approved

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Tuesday told President Giorgio Napolitano he intends to resign after the approval of an economic stability law due to be presented in parliament next week, dpa reported.

"Once such a task is completed, the Prime Minister will hand over his mandate to the Head of State (Napolitano), who will begin due consultations giving full attention to the positions proposed by each political grouping," Napolitano's office said in a statement.

The process of approving the reforms could last several days, if not weeks.
