Cargo ship breaks down near Australia's Gret Barrier Reef

Tugboats were Saturday racing to the aid of a stricken cargo ship drifting towards the Great Barrier Reef in the Coral Sea, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said, dpa reported.

The Hong Kong-registered ID Integrity, en route from Shanghai to Townsville on Australia's east coast, suffered engine failure late Friday 324 kilometres north-east of Cairns, it said.

The authority said the ship was drifting toward Shark and Vema Reefs and that "contingency planning" was underway in case the crew failed to get the engine restarted.
