The European Court of Human Rights is to hear the case of jailed Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko on August 28, the court said Friday.

Tymoshenko lodged a complained with the court in August 2011, saying her imprisonment was politically motivated and that she had not received adequate medical help for her health problems, which include a herniated disc, dpa reported.

The 51-year-old former premier was convicted of abuse of office in October and sentenced to seven years in prison. She is also facing a second trial on charges of tax evasion, which is set to resume on Monday. The ruling of the human rights court, based in the eastern French city of Strasbourg, was to be made public later, after private deliberations, it said.

Meanwhile in Kiev, the government indirectly accused three German specialists treating Tymoshenko in a hospital in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov of unnecessarily dragging out her treatment. The Health Ministry was concerned that the treatment had already lasted three months, a spokesman said.

"Such long periods are internationally unusual," he said, adding that it was causing the impression that Tymoshenko or the Germans had political motives. The opposition leader was moved from prison to the hospital in May.

Several hearings in the opposition leaders' tax evasion case have been delayed in recent weeks because of her health problems.

In March the human rights court in Strasbourg had demanded that Ukraine provide Tymoshenko with adequate medical treatment.
