Afghanistan, Pakistan begin peace talks

Afghanistan's foreign minister kicked off talks with his Pakistani counterpart on Friday to further efforts aimed at reaching a negotiated end to the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, officials said, dpa reported.

Zalmai Rassoul arrived in Islamabad two weeks after Pakistan freed at least nine Taliban leaders in an apparent move to convey its support for Kabul's peace process involving reconcilable Taliban figures.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said Rassoul and his counterpart, Hina Rabbani Khar, were discussing "regional peace and security," but did not give details of the agenda.

It is expected that the Afghan minister might seek the release of more Taliban prisoners, including senior-level leaders.

Pakistan is believed to be holding scores of Taliban detainees, among them the group's former second-in-command, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, who was arrested in the port city of Karachi in February 2010.
