Big spending Manchester City were dumped out of European competition on Tuesday as Julian Schieber scored the only goal of the game for Borussia Dortmund to give the Bundesliga champions a 1-0 victory, dpa reported.

Dortmund, Real Madrid, Schalke 04, Arsenal, AC Milan, Paris St Germain, Porto and rookies Malaga had already secured their places in the knock-out phase of the lucrative Champions League competition ahead of their final group games on Tuesday.

Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp complimented his players for winning what was considered the most difficult group: "We came out of a challenger position. I knew before that we would be a tough opponent for all teams, but I had not expected us to win the group with 14 points.

"We played very strong on the night, and that prevented Manchester City from playing their game. I think they were desperate to win, but we did not allow them into the game. It was a terrific game."

The defeat in Germany sees the Premier League champions finish last in group D, behind Dortmund who topped the group with 14 points from Real Madrid who have 11 after beating Ajax Amsterdam 4-1. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and two goals by Jose Maria Callejon saw the Spanish giants - who started with seven regulars on the bench - secure a comfortable win.

The Dutch club finished third in the group and advance to the knock-out stage of the Europa League, while City become the first English club to be knocked out without winning a single group game.

Arsenal seemed on track to top group B as they led Olympiakos 1-0 through Tomas Rosicky's goal, but an equalizer for the home side from Ioannis Maniatis in the 64th minute and a late winner from Konstantinos Mitroglou tipped the scales in favour of German club Schalke 04, who drew 1-1 at Montepellier.

"I think my team did well in difficult conditions," Schalke coach Huub Stevens said. "We had the better chances in the first half, but they came back strong after the break. It is great that we won the group, and we might avoid some of the bigger clubs in the next round."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger rued his side's missed chances: "We had the chance to score a second goal but did not do that, and I thought that we might be in trouble in the last 20 minutes."

Schalke won the group with 12 points from the Premier League club, who finished on 10. Olympiakos secured the Europa League place with nine points.

In group C, Malaga scored twice through Duda but gave away a late equalizer against Anderlecht. The 2-2 draw takes them to 12 points - four more than AC Milan who lost 1-0 at home to Zenit St Petersburg, for whom Dani scored the only goal.

The Russian side, who secured their first away win in the Champions League in four years, finished the group phase on seven points to go through to the Europa League.

Paris St Germain moved to the top of group A with a 2-1 victory against Porto, who finished second on 13 points - two less than the French club.

The second game in the group between Dinamo Zagreb and Dynamo Kiev had to be suspended for 15 minutes due to heavy snowfall. Andriy Yarmolenko scored for the visitors shortly after the restart, but Ivan Krstanovi scored from the penalty spot five minutes into injury time to give Zagreb their first point after 11 consecutive defeats in the Champions League group phase.

Kiev had already secured third place in the group ahead of the match.

Eight further Champions League matches will be played Wednesday, with three places in the knock-out stages up for grabs.

Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Valencia, Barcelona and Shakhtar Donetsk are already through, while Chelsea could become the first defending champions to be knocked out if Juventus avoid defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk.
