Love across gender lines wins at Cannes

Blue is the Warmest Colour, a story of lesbian love and self-discovery by Franco-Tunisian director Abdellatif Kechiche, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival Sunday, dpa reported.

US director Steven Spielberg, who presided this year's jury, bestowed the award jointly on Kechiche and his two lead actresses, Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux, on the closing day of the 12-day festival.

The film had been the critics' runaway choice among the 20 competing for one of cinema's most prestigious prizes.

It follows a curious teen, Adele (Exarchopoulos), over several years, from her first boyfriend to her exuberant discovery of love with an older arts student, Emma (Seydoux), to finding she has a teaching vocation and, finally, having her heart broken.

Kechiche's up-close, hyper-naturalistic filmmaking style has been hailed as groundbreaking.
