Through its Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, Iran confirmed today to Argentine Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman that its authorities have approved the Memorandum of Understanding, Télam news agency reported. The mentioned, seeks to advance in the investigation of the 1994 AMIA terrorist attack in Buenos Aires.
The information was supplied during a meeting that both Foreign Ministers held today at the U.N. Building in New York.
During the encounter, Timerman and Zarif resumed the talks on the specific points of the Memorandum during more than an hour, instead of the limited 20 minutes that the meeting was supposed to last.
Official spokesmen informed that the Foreign Ministers agreed to "make consultations with their respective Governments" so an adjourn was agreed, with the intention of resuming the conversations soon.
The same sources reported that both the meeting today as well as the coming talks will refer to the main points of the Memorandum, such as the creation of the "Commission of Truth" and the setting of a date for the Argentine court officials to travel to Teheran, to continue with the AMIA investigation.
They also pointed out that the approval of the Memorandum on the part of Iran "does not mean that the agreement now becomes effective", since an exchange of reverse letters is still needed.
