Venezuela parliament gives Maduro power to rule by decree

The socialist majority in Venezuela's unicameral National Assembly Tuesday gave final approval for President Nicoloas Maduro to rule by decree for one year, dpa reported.

The so-called Ley Habilitante will allow Maduro to fight an "economic war instigated by the bourgeoisie" without approval by the assembly.

After strongman Hugo Chavez died in March, Maduro, his hand-picked successor, was elected by a narrow majority.

Maduro said his first steps would be to lower prices of certain goods and limit capital profits to 15 to 30 per cent of revenues.

Chavez governed by decree off and on during his years in office.
