At least 17 people were killed and 22 others were rescued when a boat carrying bride, groom and wedding guests capsized in Pakistan's central city of Multan on Sunday, Xinhua reported.

Abb Takk TV said that the groom together with the bride and wedding guests was on their way back home after the wedding ceremony when the boat sank in Shershah area of Multan, a main district in the country's eastern Punjab city.

The rescued people said that they were traveling by boat as there wasn't any other means of transportation between the bride and groom's house due to flood in the area.

Police said that the boast capsized due to overloading and the killed people included the groom and his relatives, while the bride was rescued.

Divers from Pakistan army and Navy took part in the rescue operation.

The Inter Services Public Relations said in a statement that a soldier also drowned to death during the rescue operation in the area.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the incident and extended his condolence to the affected families.

In another incident in Punjab's Hafizabad district, eight children were killed and several others were injured in roof collapse.

The current monsoon rains have flooded many small and big rivers in Punjab, due to which over two million people have been affected, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said.

In a statement, the NDMA said on Saturday that the rains and floods have killed 280 people and injured more than 500 in Pakistan so far.

The statement said that rescuers have evacuated 276,681 persons from flood-hit areas and aerial monitoring is being done through helicopters.
