Bulgaria's first democratically elected President Zhelyu Zhelev has passed away, RIA Novosti reported citing Reuters.

Zhelev became Bulgaria's president on Aug.1, 1990. He was re-elected the country's president in 1992.

"Zhelev's contribution to the democratic progress and the European path of Bulgaria will always be remembered and honored by society," said the Bulgarian politician Tsetska Tsacheva.

Zhelyu Zhelev was born in the Shumen province Bulgaria in 1935. He graduated from the Sofia University. Zhelev became a member of Bulgarian Communist Party in 1960.

He is also famous as the author of the book entitled "Fascism" that was published in 1982.
