Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko posthumously awarded the late Russian oppositionist Boris Nemtsov the Order of Freedom, the RIA Novosti news agency reported March 3.

Nemtsov, who in the past held several senior positions in the Russian government, and then became an oppositionist, was shot dead in central Moscow on Feb. 28.

"For him, freedom was a universal value, which knows no state borders and any other boundaries ... He fought for the freedom of Ukraine and the freedom of Russia. That is why I decided to reward Boris Yefimovich [Nemtsov] with the Order of Freedom," Poroshenko said via Facebook.
