The quake struck 23 kilometers (14 miles) northwest of Matias Romero, a town in Oaxaca. Tremors were felt as far as the nation's capital Mexico City, Mexico State and across several other states. People fled their homes in panic to stay out in the open, Sputniknews reported.

Reports initially spoke of a magnitude 6.1 earthquake, but this was later adjusted to magnitude 5.5.

There was no word of casualties or damage.
