Opponents of the European integration may take advantage of the situation in Moldova gripped by mass protests, President Nicolae Timofti told a conference convened on Wednesday with the aim to seek ways out of the crisis, TASS reported.
"The situation in the country remains tense and we should mull over it so that we don't saw off the bough we are sitting on," Timofti said. "Those who have nostalgia for the Soviet past and are eager to take the country off the European road may grasp this opportunity."
Taking part in the conference are high-ranking officials, leaders of the ruling Alliance for European Integration, representatives of public organisations, trade unions and other associations.
The opposition is represented by the civic platform Dignity and Justice (DA) who have been camping on Chisinau's main square since September. However, the centre-left opposition that is also protesting in Moldovan capital has refused to join the dialogue with authorities.
Chisinau has been gripped by large protests for the second month. Protesters said that Moldova "has been seized by oligarchs" and demanded resignations of top officials and heads of watchdog bodies as well as early parliamentary elections and direct presidential elections by the country's citizens.
A camp was put up in the city centre by two opposition forces - socialists and the Our Party, on the one hand, and the DA platform, on the other. Although the protesters share similar demands, the DA activists favour European integration and blame the authorities "for discrediting it by stealing." The left-wing parties call for strengthening of Moldova's statehood, for rapprochement with Russia and for the Eurasian geopolitical direction.
