US Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday began a two-day visit to Spain during which he will hold meetings with King Felipe VI of Spain and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to discuss "various bilateral and global issues", Reuters reported.
Among those issues is the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, which is currently being negotiated between the European Union and the US, while the ongoing fight against Jihadism, the refugee crisis, the Middle East, which Kerry will visit "in the coming days" and Latin American issues are also likely to be on the agenda.
Kerry started his visit on Sunday afternoon with a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo.
Kerry's visit comes shortly after the recent visit of King Felipe and Queen Letizia to Washington and in the wake of a new agreement signed between Spain and the US which saw the US base of Moron de la Frontera, in the south of Spain being converted into a permanent US base of operations with over 2,000 marines stationed there.
Kerry and Garcia-Margallo also discussed the cleanup of contamination around the Spanish town of Palomares, close to Almeria, which was caused when a US bomber containing nuclear weapons crashed in 1966 making Palomares the most radioactive town in Western Europe.
This is Kerry's first visit to Spain since replacing Hilary Clinton in 2013.
