UN chief condemns terror attacks in Indonesia

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday condemned the bombings and gun attacks in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, saying there is "no justification for such acts of terrorism." Earlier on Thursday, bomb explosions and gun fires took place in downtown Jakarta, killing seven people and injuring 20 others, for which Indonesian police blamed terror group Islamic State (IS), Xinhua reported.

Ban extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery, according to a statement released by Ban's spokesperson. "He expresses his solidarity with the Government and people of Indonesia."

"He hopes the perpetrators of today's attacks will be swiftly brought to justice," added the statement.

The IS did not carry out terrorist attacks in Southeast Asia before. The Jakarta police said the IS had changed its strategy by establishing branches across nations, including in the Southeast Asia region.
