Thousands of protesters have clashed with police who have sealed off the Moldovan parliament, which had approved the new government of Prime Minister Pavel Filip earlier on Wednesday.
Part of the demonstrators tried to break through the cordons and burst into the building. But police blocked their way.
The nomination of Pavel Filip, the deputy chairman of the Democratic Party, as a candidate for Moldova's prime minister was a compromise in the standoff between President Nicolae Timofti and this political force that has formed a parliamentary majority consisting of 55 lawmakers. The democrats originally intended to nominate the first deputy chairman of the party, Vladimir Plakhotnyuk, dubbed as "grey cardinal of Moldova's politics" by local mass media.
However, the president did not back the candidate. Timofti's decision came amid mass protests in Chisinau. The opposition has said Moldova is a country seized by oligarchs and seeks to hold early parliamentary elections.
