High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini today decided to appoint Helga Schmid as Secretary General of European External Action Service (EEAS), following the resignation of Alain Le Roy, currently holding the post, for personal reasons, the EU press service reported.

"I want to warmly thank Alain Le Roy for his remarkable work atthe head of the European External Action Service. His dedication and highly-recognised diplomatic experience have been of crucial help to me, our service and our foreign policy engagement. I also take this opportunity to say that I am looking forward to continuing to work with Helga Schmid, whose current work as Political Director/Deputy Secretary General of the EEAS is an invaluable asset for her future position."

This decision will enter into force on 1 September.

Alain Le Roy has been Secretary General of the EEAS since 1 March 2015, and Helga Schmid worked as EEAS Deputy Secretary General/Political Director since 2011.
