EU leaders say UK should leave as soon as possible

The EU expects the UK to give effect to its decision to leave the bloc as soon as possible, top EU leaders said in a joint statement June 24, TASS news agency reported.

“We now expect the United Kingdom government to give effect to this decision of the British people as soon as possible, however painful that process may be,” says the statement, signed by EU Council President Donald Tusk, EU Parliament President Martin Schulz, EU Council presidency holder and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

“Any delay would unnecessarily prolong uncertainty,” the statement said.

“As agreed, the ‘New Settlement for the United Kingdom within the European Union,’ reached at the European Council on February 18-19, 2016, will now not take effect and ceases to exist,” the EU leaders said. “There will be no renegotiation.”

Britons held a referendum June 23 on whether the UK should to stay in the European Union, or leave it.

The voting results indicate that the campaign to leave the EU, known as the Brexit, has won with 51.9 percent of the votes.

In the wake of the Brexit’s victory, David Cameron has said he will step down as the UK prime minister.
