Sturgeon: Scotland may hold second independence vote after Brexit

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said June 24 a second independence referendum is “highly likely” after more than 50 percent of UK citizens voted to leave the EU, TASS news agency reported.

“It is highly likely that Scotland will hold a referendum about independence from the UK and that it is ‘democratically unacceptable’ that Scotland faces being pulled out of the EU against our will,” Sturgeon said.

She added that the Scottish government will start preparing legislation to hold another independence vote.

Britons held a referendum June 23 on whether the UK should to stay in the European Union, or leave it.

The voting results indicate that the campaign to leave the EU, known as the Brexit, has won with 51.9 percent of the votes.

In the wake of the Brexit’s victory, David Cameron has said he will step down as the UK prime minister.
