China cautions citizens over Rio violence

China has warned its nationals visiting Brazil for the Rio 2016 Olympics to follow safety precautions following a spate of thefts and armed robberies committed against the Chinese, Press TV reported.

“The Foreign Ministry's consular affairs department and embassy in Brazil remind Chinese citizens traveling to Brazil to increase their safety awareness and strengthen measures to protect their safety,” said China’s Foreign Ministry in a statement on Friday amid a spate of attacks against Chinese athletes, officials, journalists and others.

The ministry also advised citizens to avoid dangerous neighborhoods of the city, to leave their precious belonging at home and not to carry backpacks or talk on cell phones while walking in the street.

China has sent a delegation of 711 athletes and officials to Rio de Janeiro for the world sport competition, which will run between 5 and 21 of August, and are the first Olympic Games to be ever held in a South American country.

Despite the shortcomings and concerns about issues such as security, the Zika virus and Brazil's dire economic crisis, some 500,000 visitors are expected to visit the country for the games.
