At least 10 people have been killed and 40 more sustained burn injuries when a boiler of a garment packaging factory exploded in Tongi of Gazipur on Saturday morning, Tongi Hospital and Gazipur fire service sources said, local media reported.
Dr Md Parvez Mia, a residential surgeon of 50-bed Tongi Government Hospital, confirmed the casualties to the Dhaka Tribune.
The bodies of 10 people were kept in the hospital while 40 burn injured people were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Kurmitola Hospital, said the residential physician, adding that the death toll may increase.
The fire erupted after a boiler of Tempako Packaging Factory blasted at 6:15am in Bisic industrial area of Tongi, said Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman.
Twenty units of firefighters were trying to bring the fire under control.
The identities of those killed could not be confirmed yet.
