Chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will go to Russia on Jan. 1, 2017, BelTA agency quoted Sergey Lebedev, chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, as saying Oct. 28.

“On Jan. 1, Russia will accept the chairmanship of the CIS,” Lebedev told reporters in Minsk following a meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council.

“Today members of the delegations wished success to representatives of Russia, Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev,” he added.

Lebedev also said the CIS countries expressed hope that Russia’s CIS chairmanship will give new a momentum to strengthening of cooperation.

Currently, CIS is chaired by Kyrgyzstan.
