At least seven people have died due to a severe cyclonic storm Vardah in the southern Indian city of Chennai on Monday, reports local media.

The Times of India reported that the city and neighboring areas had been hit by 140 kmph (87 mph) winds that lasted for at least 90 minutes along with rain.

The deceased included one three-year-old child and four women.

The India Meteorological Department has said that the cyclonic wind speed has subsided but moderate rainfall will continue.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the people to stay safe. “My prayers are with all those people who are affected due to adverse weather conditions caused by Cyclone Vardah,” Modi tweeted.
