Bodyguards of famous Turkish singer İbrahim Tatlises, who was shot in the head on Sunday, could handle their job better, Turkish Interior Minister Besir Atalay said on Tuesday.

"Tatlises' bodyguards could work better. Security measures were obviously insufficient," Atalay was quoted by CNN Turk TV channel.

The singer was attacked when performing on a TV show. His assistant was wounded in the shoulder.

Police is looking for assaulters that fired the shots from a black car and escaped from the crime scene. Tatlises' two bodyguards came to the Istanbul police on Tuesday to give testimony.

The 58-year-old singer was operated on three times and kept in intensive care. Doctors treating the folk singer at Maslak Acibadem hospital said he had suffered brain damage and risks being left paralyzed.

President of Turkey Abdullah Gul said on Monday that he closely followed developments in case of Tatlises, CNN Turk reported.

"I follow the topic closely. I hope he will recover soon," Gul told journalists at a joint press conference with his Croatian counterpart Ivo Josipovic.

Turkish Prime minister Recep Erdogan called the hospital to ask doctors to do whatever they can to save Tatlises' life.
