A proposal to rename Nevsehir University and Siirt's Aydinlar district as part of the democratization package has been accepted in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Today`s Zaman reported.

As part of the Alevi initiative, the name of Nevsehir University will be changed to Haci Bektas Veli -- a beloved figure for Alevis who established the Bektashi order of dervishes, central to Alevi faith and practices -- and the name of Siirt's Aydinlar district will be changed to the Kurdish word "Tillo."

The proposal, announced as part of democratization package on Sept. 30, was accepted by the TBMM on Oct. 31. The university's official name has been changed to Haci Bektas-i Veli University and the name of the district to Tillo, the Kurdish equivalent of Aydinlar, which roughly translates to "enlightened."

The proposal came to the TBMM with signatures of Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputies of Nevsehir and Siirt after the reform package was announced.
