Over 75 % of motor vehicles imported to Turkey from abroad, the Turkish Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Fikri Ishik said, Turkish Anadolu news agency reported on Feb. 28.

Despite the fact that Turkey has started production of cars, however import dominates production, according to the minister.

The Minister noted that, at present export of cars produced in Turkey is also a priority for the country.

The number of vehicles commissioned in Turkey by the end of October, 2013 reached 17,879, 453 units, according to the Turkish Statistics Institute (TUIK). It exceeds the same period in 2012 by 27.4 percent, according to the institute.

The number of passenger cars make up 51.6 percent of total number of vehicles, trucks -16.4 percent, motorcycles -15.2 percent, tractors- 8.7 percent, buses -1.3 percent, vehicles for different purposes- 6.8 percent.

Some 41.5 percent of vehicles use liquefied gas in the country, 31.3 percent - petrol and 26.7 percent - diesel.

Turkey ranks in the 6th place in Europe for car production. The cars of Ford, FIAT, Renault, Toyota, Honda, Opel, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and MAN are manufactured or assembled in Turkey. Furthermore, buses of local brands such as Temsa and Otokar are also manufactured in the country.
