Turkey will create its first fighter jet by 2023, Turkish Airnewstimes newspaper quoted the head of the country's Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, Ismail Demir as saying on Sept.16.

He said currently, the preparatory work on designing the jet is underway in Turkey, stressing that designing of the first national fighter is among the priorities for the country.

Earlier, Turkish Research Center for Aerospace Technology (TUSAS) developed the first domestic training plane HURKUS which will be passed to the country's Air Forces in 2017.

Turkish Defense Industry Executive Committee made a decision to launch the mass production of the HURKUS first domestic trainer aircraft.

Around 15 HURKUS aircraft will be produced in the first stage, according to the Turkish Air Force.

The first domestic trainer aircraft HURKUS was successfully tested on Aug. 29, 2013.

Around 50 engineers and over 350 professionals worked on the design of the plane.

The center also produces parts for F-16 fighters, Airbus A380 and military Airbus A400M.

TUSAS has also started production of diffusers for Airbus A350 since 2012.
