Turkey will build special tunnels for heavy vehicles, the Minister of Transport, Maritime and Communication of Turkey Lutfi Elvan said, Kanal7 channel reported.

He said the tunnels will be built to relieve the major highways in the country. Elvan said that at the first phase it is planned to construct such tunnels in Istanbul.

For 2014, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) said there were 18,052,195 vehicles officially registered in Turkey.

According to the Turkish General Directorate of Highways, some 187 tunnels were built in the country, some 113 of them being over 500 meters long.

Some 28 tunnels are one kilometers long, 14 tunnels are over two kilometers long, and the length of three tunnels reaches three kilometers .

Turkey's largest tunnel is more than three kilometers long. Other tunnels have a length of up to 500 meters.

The total length of all tunnels in Turkey is 145,694.68 kilometers.
