Istanbul court releases chief editor of Zaman newspaper

A court in the Turkish city of Istanbul made a decision to release the editor-in chief of the Zaman newspaper, Ekrem Dumanli, TRT Haber news channel reported Dec. 19.

A court in the Turkish city of Istanbul made a decision to release the editor-in chief of the Zaman newspaper, Ekrem Dumanli, TRT Haber news channel reported Dec. 19.

However, Dumanli was forbidden to leave the country, the report said.

It was also reported that the court decided to arrest the head of the Samanyolu broadcasting company, Hidayet Karaca.

Reportedly, aside from Karaca, four persons were arrested as well. Their names were not disclosed.

Criminal cases were launched with regards to these people. They are being accused of spreading inadequate information in media, distortion of sources while preparing articles, and having ties with the supporters of Fethullah Gulen.

Fethullah Gulen [Islamic public figure currently residing in the US] is the founder of the Hizmet public movement, as well as, the Turkish Journalists and Writers Foundation. He has been accused of being involved in a huge wiretapping scandal by the Turkish government.

Turkish police detained the editor-in-chief of Zaman newspaper Ekrem Dumanli on Dec.14. Moreover, several employees of the newspaper and Samanyolu broadcasting company were detained on suspicion of being involved in the Gulen movement.

EU and the US criticized these arrests.
