Saudi-led coalition warplanes on Tuesday bombed the residence of the son of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh in capital Sanaa, sources have said.

A security source told Anadolu Agency that the Saudi-led coalition warplanes on Tuesday morning struck the resident of Ahmed, the son of former President Saleh who is allied with the Shia Houthi militant group, in southern Sanaa.

Eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency that clouds of smoke have risen from the area.

However, it could not be determined whether Ahmed Saleh had been inside his house at the time of the strike.

Earlier this month, coalition warplanes bombed the residence of Ali Abdullah Saleh in central Sanaa in a strike that left a number of casualties as well as material damage to nearby buildings.

Turmoil has mounted in Yemen since last September, when the Shia group seized capital Sanaa before extending its influence to other parts of the country.

Since late March, Saudi Arabia and several of its Arab allies have been pounding Houthi positions across Yemen.

Riyadh says its campaign is in response to appeals by Yemen's embattled president, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, for military intervention against the Houthis.

The Houthis, for their part, have denounced the air offensive as unwarranted "Saudi-American aggression" against Yemen.
