The adoption of a new constitution will be a primary task of the new parliament, Ismet Yilmaz, the newly elected speaker of the Turkish parliament, said, the Turkish Anadolu news agency reported July 2.

Yilmaz said that Turkey, actively developing from the economic and political points of view, needs a new constitution.

The Turkish opposition has always opposed the adoption of a new constitution. It believes that this is an action to the transition from a parliamentary form of government to a presidential form.

It is possible that if the Turkish parliament is unable to adopt a new constitution, a people's referendum will be held.

Earlier, Turkey's former Justice Minister, Bekir Bozdag said that the country needs a new Constitution. Bozdag said that despite the changes in over 100 paragraphs of Turkey's current Constitution, the government was unable to make it more democratic.

Moreover, following the Turkish presidential election held on August 14, 2014, Turkey's then Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said a new Constitution is required for Turkey's democratization.

Davutoglu said the new government would aim to work out a democratic Constitution.

Turkey's then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a letter to the leaders of the oppositional Republican People's Party and the Nationalist Movement Party in late October 2011 where he called on them to participate in the talks on working out a new Constitution.
