The reappointment of Turkish former Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul as defense minister testifies once again that Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu bets on stronger figures.

Gonul has great working experience. Gonul worked as an advisor in the Turkish interior ministry. He was the governor of Ankara and Kocaeli province. Gonul is one of the founders of the Council of Higher Education.

Gonul was defense minister during nine years from 2002 to 2011.

Earlier, Gonul's candidacy was not mentioned. One of two MPs from the Justice and Development Party were expected to be appointed defense minister. Alpaslan Kavaklıoglu and Mahir Unal were those candidates.

Alpaslan Kavaklioglu earlier served as the deputy governor in Erzincan and Sakarya provinces. He has worked at the country's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Cabinet of Ministers for many years. Kavaklioglu has graduated from the National Security College. He speaks English and Japanese.

Mahir Unal has graduated from Marmara University. He has served as the strategic consultant in the election campaigns of the Justice and Development Party since 2004. Unal speaks Arabic and English.

Davutoglu said that the reason for appointing Gonul the defense minister is that he has great experience in the country's defense sphere.

Given the current situation in Turkey, to be more precisely, the issue of creation of a safe zone in Syria, as well as the activity of the "Islamic State" terrorist organization and the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party - Democratic Unity Party (PYD) - this appointment was necessary.

Even the current authorities don't hide this fact either. For example, one can mention the words of Davutoglu that given the dangers for Turkey on the southern borders, this post should not remain empty.

In case of formation of a new government in Turkey, the whole composition of the government will change. But it is worth noting that since Gonul is a powerful figure, he will remain at the post of the Turkish defense minister even in case of formation of a new government.
