EU, Turkey to enhance cooperation on refugee crisis

The European Union and Turkey will extend cooperation on tackling the refugee crisis, an EU statement on the results of a meeting between EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and Turkish Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu said Monday, Sputnik reported.

"The High Representative and the Minister also agreed to strengthen the EU-Turkey cooperation on the management of refugee crisis and other migration-related issues," the statement read.

The parties stressed the importance of joint effort in the Syrian conflict settlement, according to the statement.

The meeting took place ahead of the Eastern Mediterranean - Western Balkans route conference that will take place in Luxembourg on October 8.

Syria has been in a civil war since 2011. The internal conflict is responsible for the highest refugee population in the world, with over 4 million refugees having fled Syria to neighboring Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt, according to the UN data. In recent months, tens of thousands of Syrians fled to the European Union.
