Ankara, Tehran can prevent Iraq’s split – ex-head of Turkish General Staff

Baku, Azerbaijan, May 6

By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Only Ankara and Tehran can prevent Iraq's split, the Anadolu Agency quoted Ilker Basbug, the former head of General Staff of Turkish Armed Forces, as saying May 6.

As long as Turkey and Iran oppose the creation of independent "Kurdistan" in the region, the US won't endorse the plans of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Northern Iraq for independence, according to Basbug.

Given that the creation of independent "Kurdistan" doesn't meet the interests of Iran and Turkey, these countries should firmly adhere to their position on this issue, he added.

Earlier, head of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Northern Iraq Massoud Barzani said that the KRG is determined to hold a referendum and gaining the independence is a matter of time.

The relations between the central government of Iraq and the KRG deteriorated after Iraq's provinces were seized by the militants of the "Islamic State" (IS, aka ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) terrorist group.

Barzani stated that the central government is responsible for the events in the country. He said that Iraq is on the verge of splitting and Baghdad does not control the situation in the country.
