The EU will stop Turkey's accession talks if Ankara reintroduces the death penalty, RIA Novosti agency reported July 25 citing Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, as saying.

The EU will stop Turkey's accession talks if Ankara reintroduces the death penalty, RIA Novosti agency reported July 25 citing Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, as saying.

The death penalty was abolished in Turkey in 2004. For the last time the death penalty was used in Turkey in 1984.

An association agreement between the EU and Turkey was signed in 1963. Ankara filed an application for the EU membership in 1987, but the negotiations on Ankara's accession to the EU started only in 2005.
