Turkey together with Azerbaijan will strengthen Europe’s energy security thanks to the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), said Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

Yildirim made the remarks Oct. 10 addressing the 23rd World Energy Congress in Istanbul, the TRT Haber news channel reported.

“Turkey implemented such important projects as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC), Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum. Now, after the implementation of the Blue Stream, we are implementing the Trans Anatolian pipeline [TANAP],” noted the prime minister.

“Turkey together with Azerbaijan will strengthen Europe’s energy security with the help of the Trans Anatolian pipeline,” he said adding that Turkey will continue implementation of big projects.

Energy consumption in Turkey will be twice more than the current level in 2023, said Yildirim.

The Southern Gas Corridor is one of the priority energy projects for the EU. It envisages the transportation of 10 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas from the Caspian region to the European countries through Georgia and Turkey.

At the initial stage, the gas to be produced as part of the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz field is considered as the main source for the Southern Gas Corridor project. Other sources can also join this project at a later stage.

As part of the Stage 2 of the Shah Deniz development, the gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and TAP.

The 23rd World Energy Congress started its work Oct. 9 and will end Oct. 13.
