At least 12 bodies have been recovered after fire broke out in a private girls' dormitory late Tuesday in the southern province of Adana, a local governor said, Anadolu reported.

"We have reached 12 bodies, the 22 injured have been rushed to the hospitals," Adana Governor Mahmut Demirtas told Anadolu Agency.

Demistas had previously announced that a total of 28 students were staying at the secondary school dormitory when the fire broke out.

He also said some of the injured students were affected by the smoke and some of them had been wounded while trying to escape the burning building.

The building has since been evacuated while fire investigators are trying to determine what caused the blaze.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Veysi Kaynak, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, National Education Minister Ismet Yilmaz along with Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya are heading to Adana, according to prime ministry sources.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim was also briefed by Adana governor and related ministers.
