Azerbaijan, Ganja, 24 January / Trend corr. V.Mammadov / The Department on the west region of the State Committee on Work with Religious Groups launched raids on prevention of functioning of the Iegova Witnesses religious group in Ganja City of Azerbaijan.
"Some untraditional religious groups have been functioning in Ganja City although their functioning had been prohibited, "Firdovsi Karimov, the director of the west department of the Committee, stated to Trend.
Iegova Witnesses received the registration in State Committee in Baku. The organization also must be registered in the Committee branches in regions.
Karimov stated that Iegova Witnesses have been underwent raids for several times.
Karimov said that if the organization not to stop illegal functions the concrete measures would be taken. Ganja holds control over the Vahabists.
The director said that 0.55% of population of the west region is believers. The number of prayers in the Shah Abbas Mosque made up 60 or 70 people at the beginning of 1990s. Today, the figure reaches 600.
The number of believers Christians is 300 people, 40 people are the members of the Nurist religious group and 100 - Vahabists.
