Former Latvian President visits Teze Pir mosque in Baku

Ex-President of Latvia (1999-2007), Special Envoy to the UN Secretary General, vice-chair of the Reflection group on the long term future of the European Union Vaira Vike-Freiberga jn Sundat visited Teze Pir mosque in Baku, "YES Azerbaijan" international advisory group group member Rovshan Muradov told Trend.

Former President of Latvia arrived in Baku on Saturday on invitation of "YES Azerbaijan".

Mrs. Vike-Freiberga was informed of the reconstruction of the complex.

She was told the complex houses the building of the Baku Islamic University among other facilities.

Mrs. Vike-Freiberga viewed the mosque`s library which features 6,000 books.

The former Latvian president was accompanied by Azerbaijani MP Ganira Pashayeva and Latvian ambassador in Baku Hardijs Baumanis.

Stressing that the various ethnic and religious communities live in harmony in Azerbaijan, the deputy noted attention exerted by the President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO goodwill ambassador, MP Mehriban Aliyeva to religious communities.

She spoke about the repair and construction of churches and synagogues alongside mosques in Azerbaijan.

According to Pashayeva, Azerbaijan is an exemplary country in the field of tolerance, dialogue among cultures and civilizations.
