Azerbaijani GSM operator intends to purchase controlling stake in Azertelecom

Azerbaijani mobile operator Bakcell intends to buy a controlling stake in the telecommunications company Azertelecom, the country's primary provider, the company told Trend on Thursday.

The businesses are in negotiations, but no specific agreements have yet been made.

Azertelecom began commercial expansion in Azerbaijan in 2009, and today controls a quarter of the country's Internet market.

The company specializes in delivering Internet traffic and data transmission services to mobile operators, Internet service providers and state communication operators.

The Azertelecom network covers all large and medium cities in Azerbaijan.

Azertelecom's Internet traffic connects in the north to the main hub in Stockholm and Frankfurt via Russia's "MegaFon" and to Frankfurt via Istanbul in the west.
