Aggressive Armenian policy is the root of the current confrontational atmosphere and poses a threat to security in the region, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev told Trend, commenting on the statement by Armenian Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan about the military parade in Baku.

"Strengthening the military potential of Azerbaijan would allow it to provide security for its people. Armenian aggression keeps the entire region in turmoil, and it is for this reason, and in view of the ongoing occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia that Baku strengthens its defensive potentialities," Abdullayev said.

Armenia is not a guarantor of the security in Nagorno-Karabakh, he said, adding that it is an illegal occupier.

"The country can not be the guarantor of the security in the region, for it is leading an occupation and has previously inflicted bloody ethnic cleansing and expelled local populations. What Armenia is doing today is a continuation of its bloody occupation policy. Given the current situation, Azerbaijan should strengthen its defense capability," Abdullayev said.

As a result, the Azerbaijani army has now become a very strong, trained and equipped with high-tech equipment, he said.

On May 26, a military parade was held in Baku on the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan.
