Baku, Azerbaijan, March 18
By Huseyn Valiyev - Trend:

Azerbaijan may raise the issue of presenting a top-level domain .baku, in the future, IntraNS (national domain registrar .az) company told Trend on March 18.

The issue of presenting a top-level domain is not sudden and may be considered if it is required, the company said.

"One can call our position on this issue as temporizing," the company said. "The experience of the countries with geographical top-level domains, such as .berlin or .moscow will show their great demand."

"An economic component is an important aspect in presenting the geographically relevant domains," the company said. "The cost of one bid to the International Organization for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is about $180,000. Moreover, the registrar is obliged to make contributions quarterly to the amount of $25,000."

"The geographically relevant top-level domains can not be registered without obtaining the proper permissions," the company said. "This is also an important aspect. For example, it is necessary to obtain permission of Baku's executive power for getting the domain .baku."

ICANN has recently announced about presenting a top-level domain .berlin for Germany. The domain is designed for residents and organizations of the city, as well as for websites connected with the capital of Germany. So far, some 83 top-level domains have been registered.
