By Huseyn Valiyev -Trend:

Baku Telephone Communications production associations of the Azerbaijani
Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan is preparing to move to the new protocol IPv6, production association told Trend on March 27.

It is considering creating a second alternative Internet service provider - BakinterNet- 2, the infrastructure of which will fully support the new Internet protocol. Transition to the IPv6 protocol is primarily due to the lack of IP- addresses in IPv4 space. Peak migration to the new protocol is expected within the next three years. Today major Internet giants such as Google, Yandex and others are gradually shifting their platform to IPv6.

"The transition to IPv6 is currently relevant for the capital market, is now the subject of discussions with other Internet service providers. Technical requirements for upgrading software and hardware platforms of the state provider have been presented to the telecommunications equipment manufacturers. Outlines on transition to the new protocol will emerge in the second half of the year, "the production association said.

At present, about 50 percent of the network infrastructure of the BakinterNet public provider supports IPv6. A similar situation is typical for commercial providers.

The new Internet protocol IPv6 has a colossal amount of IP-addresses that can address significantly more nodes than the protocol IPv4.

Transition to the new IP protocol may take time, as there are many devices on the market that are unable to support the new protocol. In this regard, both protocols will operate in parallel for several years making both consumers and providers of telecommunication services ready for a complete migration.
