Journalists Appeal Accusation of Blaspheming Islamic Religion and Prophet Allowed

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / The appeal on the court decision by journalists accused of blaspheming the Islamic religion and Prophet Mohammad has been put in operation.

Judge Rasul Safarov of the Azerbaijani Court of Appeals reported that the date of the criminal hearing on the appeal will be fixed next week. Samir Sadagatoghlu and Rafik Taghy were detained in November 2006. They are charged in compliance with Article 283 (spread of racial, national, and religious hatred and hostility) of the Criminal Code.

On 4 May, the Baku City Yasamal District Court sentenced Sadagatoghlu to four years and Rafik Taghy to three years imprisonment.

The aforementioned persons are accused of blaspheming the Islamic religion and Prophet Mohammad in the newspaper article ' Europe and Us'.
