Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company CJSC examines the technical possibility of construction and operation of ferries with a capacity of 100 wagons in the Caspian Sea, a source in the company told Trend.

"Taking into account the potential dynamics of cargo transportation through Azerbaijan's territory and the Caspian Sea, the company plans to build new ferries with a capacity of 54 wagons and a RoPax vessel (designed to carry wheeled cargo) with a capacity of 53 trucks," said the source.

"In addition, the technical possibility of construction and operation of the ferries with a capacity of 100 wagons in the Caspian Sea is also examined, but it is for a longer term," the source said.

Currently, the company has 14 ferries with different capacities, which ply in the directions of Alat-Aktau-Alat and Alat-Turkmenbashi-Alat.

Depending on cargo volumes, the Company's ships are kept in reserve or backed up, which allows cutting costs.

Taking into account the significant growth in cargo transportation volumes, Azerbaijan Shipping Company decided to use several backup ferries in December 2015.
