Georgia increases supply of Azerbaijani gas

Georgia imported nearly 195,000 tons of oil equivalent of natural gas in the amount of $40.6 million from Azerbaijan in Jan. 2016, Georgia's National Statistics Service's report said.

On an annualized basis, the volumes of Georgian natural gas imports from Azerbaijan in terms of value increased by 13.8 percent, in quantitative terms - by 24,600 tons of oil equivalent, or by 14.5 percent.

For comparison: in January 2015, Georgia imported from Azerbaijan 170,340 tons of natural gas in oil equivalent worth $35.68 million.

Specific weight of gas amounted to 82 percent in total volume of imports from Azerbaijan to Georgia for this period.

Azerbaijan is the main supplier of this type of fuel to Georgia with a specific weight of 77.3 percent of total imports in this category.

Over the last month, Georgia imported gas in the amount of $52.5 million as a whole, the report said.

The rest of the gas was supplied by Russia and other sources.

Georgia imported products in the amount of $49.5 million from Azerbaijan in Jan. 2016, which is two percent less than in Jan. 2015.

Azerbaijan exports its gas to Georgia through a pipeline linking the two countries in the Azerbaijan's Gazakh district. Power flow of gas through this pipeline is more than 2.5 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year.
