By Elena Kosolapova - Trend:

Parliamentary election in Azerbaijan proceeds with a high voter turnout, says Sergei Lebedev, head of observer mission from CIS, the organization's executive secretary.

Lebedev speaking to Trend Nov. 1 said that his personal impressions and his colleagues' impressions from visiting polling stations is that the election is going on peacefully with a high voter turnout.

"There are many local observers from parties, from candidates, and this suggests that the election is open," he said. "Everyone has an opportunity to observe the voting process."

"I think the good organization and high activity of citizens at the election suggest that people feel a sense of responsibility for the future of their country, for those whom they will elect to the parliament," said Lebedev.

"Secondly, everything we see suggests that the election is to be held peacefully," said the observer.

He added that the CIS mission has exchanged views with local observers and representatives of other observer groups from Western and Eastern countries.

"My colleagues from other missions say they have similar impressions," he added. "The election is being held peacefully, it is well-organized, and all this suggests a great preparatory work."

"CIS observers are working in many cities and districts of Azerbaijan. We have 147 observers. Many have taken part in the opening of polling stations," said Lebedev.

As many as 503 international observers from 40 organizations and over 66,000 local observers are watching the parliamentary election in Azerbaijan.
