Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 11 / Trend /

At a meeting in the Parliament of Azerbaijan the OSCE member countries' ambassadors have discussed the situation in the region.

Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Ogtay Asadov received the delegation of the Permanent Representatives of 19 member countries of the OSCE which is in Baku, the Parliament told Trend on Tuesday.

Asadov told the guests about the important role of Azerbaijan in the region, political and economic progress, the important steps for the construction of a democratic state and effective cooperation with international organizations. He noted that the European integration is one of the priorities of the foreign policy of Baku.

Asadov has informed that Azerbaijan is a member of a number of influential international organizations, including the OSCE, and is actively involved in their work.

Asadov touched on Azerbaijan's leading role in the region and noted that Azerbaijan has both initiated and directly implemented large-scale projects in the region. Up to 80 percent of the GDP of the South Caucasus falls to Azerbaijan.

However, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which arose as a result of the occupation policy of Armenia, creates serious impediment to this development, at the same time being a serious threat to the security of the region and Europe. Without a resolution of the conflict a reliable peace and security in the region cannot be ensured.

Asadov called for increased efforts to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Permanent Representative of Norway to the OSCE Robert Kvile, expressing gratitude for the reception, said that the main purpose of the visit is to get more acquainted with the region. He noted that information received at meetings held in the framework of the visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan, will create a complete picture of the situation in the region.

Then there was an exchange of views on the issues of Western integration of Azerbaijan, cooperation with the OSCE, exchange of experience in the field of legislation and other matters of mutual interest.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Speaker Bahar Muradova, head of the parliament's office Safa Mirzayev, Permanent Representative to the OSCE Ghalib Israfilov and other officials.
